Karkidaka Vavu Bali – 2023 at Kent Ayyappa Temple
Kent Ayyappa Temple is organising this year’s Karkidaka Vavu Bali from 6.30 AM until 10.00 AM on Monday 17 July, 2023, at Medway Hindu Mandir (361 Canterbury Street, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 5XS). Shree Abhijith, the resident priest of Kent Ayyappa Temple, will be present to facilitate and guide the Pithru Tharpan rituals on the day.
Karkidaka Vavu or ‘Karkidaka Vavu Bali’ is the name for the rituals performed by the Hindus in the Indian state of Kerala for their deceased ancestors. This day is also known as ‘Vavu Bali’ and is held in the month of ‘Karkidakam’ in the Malayalam calendar. The ceremonies for deceased grandparents, parents, siblings, children and relatives are performed on ‘Karutavavu’ (new moon) in the month of Karkidaka. In Kerala, the ‘Shraddh’ rituals done for the soul of the dead is known as ‘Bali’ and the new moon day or ‘Amavasi’ is referred as ‘Vavu’, hence the name ‘Vavu Bali’. On the auspicious day of Karkidaka Vavu, devotees in large numbers perform the ‘Bali Tharpanam’ ritual in order to pay homage to their departed ancestors. Karkidaka Vavu is performed under the supervision of known priest or elderly person.

ഈ വർഷത്തെ (2023) കർക്കിടക വാവുബലി കെന്റ് അയ്യപ്പക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ (Medway Hindu Mandir, 361 Canterbury Street, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 5XS) ജൂലൈ മാസം 17 -)o തീയതി തിങ്കളാഴ്ച്ച രാവിലെ 6.30 മുതൽ 10.00 വരെ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പൂജാരി ശ്രീ അഭിജിത്തിന്റെ കാർമികത്വത്തിൽ, നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. മരിച്ചവര്‍ക്കുള്ള ശ്രാദ്ധ ആചാരങ്ങളെ ബലി എന്നും അമാവാസി ദിനത്തെ വാവ് എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നതിനാല്‍ കര്‍ക്കിടക മാസത്തില്‍ നടത്തുന്ന ഈ ചടങ്ങിനെ കര്‍ക്കിടക വാവ് ബലി എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു.
ഒരു കര്‍ക്കിടക ബലി സമര്‍പ്പണം സമസ്ത ജീവജാലങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമായാണ് സമര്‍പ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ വാവു ബലി മലയാളമാസമായ കര്‍ക്കിടകത്തില്‍ നടത്തുന്നതിനാല്‍, ആചാരത്തിന് കര്‍ക്കിടക വാവു ബലി എന്നാണ് പേര്. കര്‍ക്കിടകം മാസത്തില്‍ അമാവാസി ദിനത്തില്‍ ബലിയിടുന്നത് കൂടുതല്‍ ശുഭകരവും മരണപ്പെട്ടയാളുടെ ആത്മാവിന് മോക്ഷം ലഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. പിതൃക്കളുടെ ആത്മശാന്തിക്കായി പുണ്യതീര്‍ത്ഥങ്ങളില്‍ ബലിയര്‍പ്പിക്കുന്ന ദിവസമാണ് കര്‍ക്കിടക വാവ്. കര്‍ക്കിടക വാവ് ദിവസം ചെയ്യുന്ന ശ്രാദ്ധമൂട്ടല്‍ പിതൃക്കള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു വര്‍ഷത്തേക്ക് നിത്യേന അനുഭവപ്പെടുമെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
തലേദിവസം വ്രതമെടുത്ത് അമാവാസി ദിവസം കുളിച്ചു ഈറനണിഞ്ഞു മരിച്ച് മണ്മറഞ്ഞുപോയ പിതൃക്കളെ മനസ്സില്‍ സങ്കല്‍പ്പിച്ചു ഭക്തിപുരസരം വേണം ബലിയിടേണ്ടത്. എള്ളും, പൂവും, ഉണക്കലരിയും ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള പൂജാദ്രവ്യങ്ങള്‍കൊണ്ടാണ് ബലിതര്‍പ്പണം നടത്തുക. പിതൃക്കള്‍ക്ക് ബലിയിടുന്നവരാണ് വ്രതം എടുക്കേണ്ടത്.
