About Vidyarambham (Aksharabhyasam)

Vidyarambham is a sacred Hindu tradition observed on Vijayadashami, especially in Kerala, where children are formally introduced to the world of learning. It symbolises the start of education in academics, music, dance, languages, and traditional arts.

• Vidya means knowledge
• Arambham means beginning

The ritual usually begins with writing the mantra “Hari Sree Ganapataye Namah” on a tray of rice or sand, under the guidance of a priest or guru. In some traditions, it is also inscribed on the child’s tongue with gold, symbolising divine blessing.

At Kent Ayyappa Temple, children up to 12 years old can participate. For older children, it is a renewal of their commitment to learning. This ceremony is a cultural treasure for families, helping us preserve the tradition of reverence for knowledge, learning, and teachers.

• Devotees attending Vilakku Pooja / Neeranjanam should bring:
  • Own lamp (Nilavilakku)
  • One coconut
  • Fresh flowers
• Prasadam must be collected on the same day.
• Registration is confirmed only upon receiving an official confirmation from the temple team.
